Friday Animal Rescue Site Find - Amber Jewelry

A jewelry trend for Summer 2010  is amber.  It’s easy to find amber colored beads and stones, but look carefully if you are looking for real amber.  Real amber is fossilized tree resin which is why you sometimes find little critters and plant stuff in it.  Today most commercial quality amber is mined in the Dominican Republic and on Europe’s Baltic coast.  But there are less productive sites in Mexico, Burma, and, wait for it, New Jersey.  If you are lucky you may find some of the super fluorescent variety washed up by the sea in Catania, Sicily.   Apparently amber fluoresces under a black light.  The higher the sulfur content, the more is fluoresces.  Interesting, huh?
